WHAT IS HOMEWORK?

Assigning homework serves various educational needs. It serves as an intellectual discipline, establishes study habits, eases time constraints on the amount of curricular material that can be covered in class, and supplements and reinforces work done in school. In addition, it fosters student initiative, independence, and responsibility and brings home and school closer together. Homework is defined as out-of-class tasks assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work. There are three types of homework: practice (to reinforce, remediate or enrich skills), preparation (to help students get ready for activities that will occur in the classroom) and extension (long-term continuing projects that parallel class work).

Parents are asked to support their children in establishing a daily homework routine. Identifying a regular time and appropriate place in the home to complete homework is beneficial.

HOMEWORK POLICY

This Homework Policy is intended as a guideline, which suggests things like frequency and amount of time per night, while recognizing that both the type and amount of work may vary from week to week. This Homework Policy has also been designed to align with our School Plan for Continuous Improvement with a focus on student achievement. These time guidelines have been designed to allow students to participate in other outside school activities.
